UNIVERSITY COLLEGE 53 - PEMBROOKE 46

The championship set University College against Pembroke, both unbeaten throughout competition, but Pembroke the more organised team having trained and played together the entire season. Univ appeared a little less prepared, with problems getting enough players to attend games throughout the tourney. Both teams, however, were there to win and players from both sides looking very serious.

Univ took an early lead with the 3-point shooting prowess of blues shooting guard Dan Woodbridge. Pembroke managed to fight back soon, though, taking a 20-17 lead in the first quarter with the soft hands and offensive moves of blues big man Simon Cotton, who made baskets from inside and outside the paint.

The second quarter saw some good team play from Pembroke as they extended their lead to 7 at the half. Pembroke's biggest lead of the game reached 9 in the third quarter. Adam Curphy (Univ) stepped up knocking down 6 points in the third quarter to keep the game tight.

Univ's tactics in the second half of swarming Cotton seemed to be working as he tired and found himself in foul trouble, leaving both the Pembroke offence and defence severely weakened. Univ managed to cut the lead to 2 going into the fourth quarter.

Blues Mike Taylor, with his trademark aggressiveness, suddenly came alive and sealed 10 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter for Univ. A few minutes left, the game soon became a fouling match by Pembroke, but Woodbridge stepped up with poise controlling the point and knocking down free throws. Univ extended the lead to ten late in the fourth.

Cotton hit a desperation 3 at the buzzer to make the game respectable.

Woodbridge led all scorers with 31; Cotton made 25 for Pembroke.
